Conference on University Led Development

Welcome to the upcoming international conference of the University Network for Climate and Ecosystems Change and Adaptation Research at the National University of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur on 30th May 2014. The 8th International conference of the network will focus on "UNIVERSITY-LED DEVELOPMENT", and is jointly organized by United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) and the National University of Malaysia. In conjunction to the Conference, UN-CECAR will be organizing its 8th Strategic Planning Workshop on 31 May - 1 June 2014 in Malacca, Malaysia.

World is facing increasingly complex and interconnected challenges that not only threaten human well-being but also is affecting the earth system functioning. Increasing disasters from extreme events attributed to climate change is sending us all a strong message to take actions to ensure development is pursued in a sustainable manner. The role of higher education in the innovation, policymaking and development is critical in adapting to these complex problems under uncertain future scenarios. The key question for the 8th UN-CECAR international conference is "what role universities can play to bring about rapid and sustainable development". The role of universities will need to be re-assessed to design and develop programs to look at these problems in a holistic manner. In addition, the outcomes of the conference is expected to contribute into other international initiatives like 7th World Water Forum in Korea and World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, which will be held in Sendai, Japan in 2015.
